C: Engaging students in Learning

The students in my Freshman Physical science course participate in an activity called "Create your own Lab". They are provided with an outline, the instructional outcomes and a few restrictions and are then set off in small groups to design their own lab experiment. The groups will then present their lab proposals to the class during a caucus styled event. The lab receiving the greatest support will then be submitted to me for final approval. During the activity students take on many roles and get the opportunity to completely design their own investigations and assessments.

A: Communicating with students

I heavily utilize technology to communicate with my students outside the classroom. I maintain a Google classroom page and update it with announcements and important documents. Students are also encouraged to email me if they need help outside my regular classroom hours.

My classroom space is also set up to communicate with my students. On the walls I maintain a calendar, list of upcoming assignments, table of contents for lab binders and the desired learning outcomes for the unit.
